Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center (FZB)
The Research Center Borstel is the Lung Research Center of the Leibniz Association.
The Research Center Borstel is the Lung Research Center of the Leibniz Association. The focus is on
chronic inflammatory lung diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
and allergies, as well as tuberculosis and other infection-related inflammations of the lung. The
overriding goal of the basically interdisciplinary and translational research activities is to elucidate
the causes and mechanisms of infectious and non-infectious chronic inflammatory diseases of the
lung in order to derive new innovative concepts for their prevention, diagnosis and therapy.
The Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center was founded in 1947 as a tuberculosis institute
with the support of the state of Schleswig-Holstein and the district of Segeberg and has been a
member of the Leibniz Association since 2003. It is financed in equal parts by the Federal
Government, the State of Schleswig-Holstein and the State Community. The Research Center Borstel,
Leibniz Lung Center is a member of the German Centers for Health Research (DZL and DZIF), BMBF
alliances and the Cluster of Excellence "Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation". The FZB plays a
leading role in Leibniz agendas and has ten professors appointed jointly with the universities in
Lübeck and Kiel. With over 200 cooperation agreements, the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung
Center is widely networked internationally. In addition, Borstel is home to the National Reference
Center for Mycobacteria and the Supranational Reference Laboratory for Mycobacteria of the WHO.
